Frequently Asked Questions
What is a NOM, and why is it important?
The Official Mexican Standards (NOM) are mandatory technical regulations that govern
the domestic industry to establish measures that ensure the quality, safety, and harmonization of the products and services used by consumers. The NOM promote economic development and the quality of goods and services, while also helping consumers make more informed decisions.
Could I import and sell my product in Mexico without NOM certification?
To import telecommunications, electrical, or electronic products or equipment, you must obtain the applicable NOM compliance certificate. If you do not have this certificate, your products will be held at customs, resulting in additional costs due to fines and storage fees.
If I import a product that has already been certified in another country, do I need NOM certification?
Yes, because NOM certification is mandatory, and you must comply with the standards that apply to your product. NOM certification ensures quality, safety, and consumer protection in the domestic market.
What should I do if my product requires laboratory testing?

We can help you carry them out through our subsidiary, Isatel Laboratorios, which is accredited and authorized by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT, formerly IFT), and is also accredited and certified by:

  • Mexican Accreditation Body (Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación (EMA))
  • Directorate General for Standards (Dirección General de Norma (DGN))
  • National Commission for Energy Efficiency (Comisión Nacional para el Uso Eficiente de Energía (CONUEE))
How long is my NOM certificate valid?
Some certificates are valid for one year, while others are generally valid for three years; we will follow up with you to renew them if necessary.
